HPPID Camera Memo

Dear High Pointe Residents,

We wanted to let you know that the High Pointe Public Improvement District No. 1, (“HPPID”), has recently installed cameras in some of the public right-of-ways and medians within the High Pointe Community.  These cameras are being installed and will be used as part of a joint program between the High Pointe PID and the Cedar Hill Police Department.  These cameras will only be used in conjunction with matters that involve Police assistance in helping protect the High Pointe Community and HPPID maintained property.

Background/History

The HPPID first looked into using cameras back in 2008 after holding Citizen Meetings to discuss the use and desire of residents for having cameras.   The HPPID met with several companies that specialized in cameras that were used in many urban settings.  The initial system that was chosen was a very sophisticated system that had been used in the Fair Park area. Unfortunately, the company that provided us that system was not adequate in providing service for ongoing maintenance of the system and that program was scrapped.  Also, in 2008 the Cedar Hill Police department stated that they had no established program for using camera footage from neighborhoods, in solving any criminal incidents and would likely not rely on any footage.

Nearly two years ago, the idea of having cameras was brought up again, this time by the Cedar Hill Police Department.  They had experienced very positive results using a camera system in various parts of the City and approached the HPPID about a joint program that would enable the Police to use camera systems installed in High Pointe, for use in addressing crime and incidents within the High Pointe Community.  The HPPID has discussed this potential Camera Program at each of their Board Meetings for the past two years, ultimately leading to their commencing this program.

There are a total of (7) cameras in (6) locations, that includes License Plate Recognition (“LPR”) cameras and cameras that can zoom in, all which are viewing the roadways.  The purpose of this is to help the Cedar Hill Police Department identify vehicles that might be involved in criminal incidents, with time dated images in various high traffic areas of the community.  The difference between current day and 2008 is the Police Department is fully engaged in this program and they are working directly with the HPPID to help us achieve a very safe community.

We are very excited to see the results from this new program. If you would like to know more about the program, please attend the High Pointe PID Annual Citizens Meeting on Thursday, September 12th at 6:30 pm.  The meeting will be held, as always, at the High Point Baptist Church, located at 101 High Pointe Lane.

Sincerely,

HPPID Board of Directors
